A Review of Daindreth’s Assassin by Elisabeth Wheatley

Excellent. Simply excellent.

Daindreth’s Assassin is the first book in a complete, 5-book series by Elisabeth Wheatley. Not only is it an exciting read, filled with an immersive world and complex characters, it also contains a unique magic system (which I’m always a fan of) and perhaps some of the best writing of the effects of trauma—and how our loved ones can support us and help us heal from that trauma. (Ms. Wheatley does this most expertly, in my opinion.)

The main protagonist, Amira, is bound by a powerful curse to obey her father, the king. Born to be a sorceress, she serves as his assassin, his hand in the shadows, a knife in the dark for his enemies. A life of forced servitude is all she knows, and it’s all she thinks she’ll ever know.

But when Amira is tasked with the treasonous duty of murdering the Archduke Daindreth, the future emperor, she fails and discovers a terrible secret that affects not just her father’s kingdom, but the entire empire at large.

Daindreth, too, is under a terrible curse, just as much a slave to his as Amira is to hers. And if his curse endures, the entire world will succumb to darkness and destruction.

However, even the most powerful of curses can be broken, and in a strange twist of fate, Amira seems to be the only one who can help Daindreth break free from his curse.

Will Daindreth’s assassin become his salvation? And can he, perhaps, become hers?

If you want to know the answers to those questions, you’ll have to read and find out for yourself.

You can find Elisabeth Wheatley’s books in multiple formats through online sellers, or you can support her directly via her own website. I don’t normally link to books in these posts, but if authors sell books through their own sites, I’ll support that endeavor ten times out of ten!

As for me, I’m going to jump into the next book in Ms. Wheatley’s series, Daindreth’s Outlaw.

Until next time,

Al
